Introduction
Getting the right laptop for your upcoming Computer Science course can be really hard. Sometimes so hard that getting the uni offer in the first place looks easy by comparison. Every Reddit thread says something different, every retailer has that perfect “student laptop bundle” they're trying to sell you, and uni IT pages always seem to list the bare minimum rather than what would actually be effective.
This is where Plample comes in. Instead of starting with laptops, we start by looking at the software you'll actually be using for your CS degree. We pulled information from CS courses at Cambridge, Imperial, UCL, Edinburgh, Cardiff and Aston (to name a few) to see what software and programmes students are really installing on their laptops. We then checked that against what students say on The Student Room, and put it through Plample's recommendation engine at three common budgets: £750, £1,000 and £1,500. Here's what we found.
The software you'll actually run
The content of CS courses across the country differs, but the toolkit is pretty consistent. Python is close to universally used in first year, alongside Java, Kotlin, C, C++ and Haskell. Imperial's first-year practical, for example, spends two terms on Haskell and Java/Kotlin before an ARM assembler project in C. Some other things we found:
- Cardiff runs something similar, teaching algorithms in Python and Java alongside architecture and operating systems.
- SQL, JavaScript and HTML/CSS turn up once the web modules begin. For editors, VS Code is usually used alongside JetBrains (IntelliJ, PyCharm). Eclipse still pops up in Java-heavy modules, and Android Studio if you pick something mobile-oriented.
- Git and GitHub are course staples from week one. VirtualBox, VMware and Docker also come up for operating systems and security work, with Windows users leaning on WSL more than dual-booting.
- Later modules add Anaconda, Jupyter and MATLAB, then TensorFlow or PyTorch once the machine learning modules start. For anything writing-related, LaTeX is used through Overleaf for lab reports and your dissertation. The basic Office or Google Workspace programmes are needed for pretty much everything else uni-related, although Notion regularly pops up on the forums for note taking.
A common trend across all the IT pages we read: the hardware bar universities set themselves is pretty low, since any heavy computing happens in labs or on remote desktops. UCL's minimum is an i5, 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD, which is easy enough to get these days without spending much. Cambridge suggests an entry-level machine of roughly £800, with half the drive kept free to install Linux distributions like Ubuntu.

The general pattern in every row is that RAM and CPU cores matter far more than the graphics card for a regular CS degree. A discrete GPU only really makes sense if you go deep into ML research or 3D graphics. For everything else, the JetBrains IDEs and the Android Studio emulator are what set the bar.
The spec Plample built from this
When we put the software profile into the engine — every app in the table above, with no OS preference — it produced this dream spec:
- CPU: Intel Core Ultra 7 255H class (Cinebench 2024 ≈ 1,008)
- RAM / storage: 16GB / 512GB SSD
- Battery: maxed
- Size:15" to 16"
Laptops like this sit comfortably above the “8GB, quad-core” minimum the universities suggest. They're built to run IntelliJ, the Android emulator and a VM or two at the same time, which is the usual load for a CS student, rather than having only one thing open at a time. The 16GB/512GB target leaves plenty of space for virtualisation and datasets without paying for an overly powerful GPU the degree won't touch. Battery got weighted heavily because we chose “always on the move”: with lectures, labs and library sessions every day, there won't always be a free plug.
The only potential issue is that the best-performing laptops on our site came out between 14" and 16" rather than exactly 15". They're here because they beat the 15" options on everything else.
How to read the scores
In the Plample scoring system, each laptop has an overall match score out of 100, where 100 is a perfect match against the ideal spec. For this CS example the score was formed of five weighted parts:
- Performance — CPU and GPU against what the apps actually demand.
- Storage and RAM — against the 16GB/512GB target.
- Battery— weighted up because of “always on the move”.
- Future-proofing — how much headroom you have for heavier work later in the degree.
- Value — price against the spec you get.
A higher score means a laptop is a better all-round fit for CS at that budget — not simply the most powerful machine on the shelf.

Takeaway:the EliteBook wins on pure computing power, so it's the best shout if you're into compilers, containers and VMs. The ThinkBook, on the other hand, has one of the best batteries on the list and way more storage too, which arguably makes it the smarter buy if you really are “always on the move”.

Takeaway:the Yoga Slim 7 is the standout. It's the only match that hits the ideal CPU target outright while staying light and lasting on battery, which is about as good as it gets for a mobile CS student. Go for the maxed-out EliteBook instead if you specifically need very large RAM and storage for local VMs, big datasets or containers, and don't mind carrying a bit more for it.

Each price is the cheapest live UK listing on that laptop's Plample page at the time of writing. A few of the cheapest listings are renewed units, or a lower RAM/storage variant than the configuration scored above, so open the page and check the exact spec before you buy.
Closing
That's the reasoning behind the picks, based on what UK CS courses genuinely run rather than a generic “best laptops” list. But this only covers coursework.
