Introduction

Starting an architecture degree (this blog also covers Architectural Studies and Architecture & Environmental Design too) and trying to figure out what laptop to get is not an easy task. So we worked backwards from the actual software you'll be using for your degree, ran it through our matching engine at three budgets, and came out with picks that hold up under real workloads rather than just a spec sheet.

The right laptop for architecture is decided by the software you'll actually use every week, not by whichever machine has the shiniest number on the box.

One thing to flag early: do NOT buy a Mac for this degree. Revit, one of the core pieces of software you'll use from Year 2 onwards, does not run natively on macOS. You'd be paying Mac prices for a laptop you can't fully use on your own course.

The software you'll be using

Here's what fills your applications folder over the course of an architecture degree, and what it actually needs from a laptop.

  • AutoCAD - core from Year 1, for 2D and 3D drawings. Not hugely demanding, 16GB RAM is fine.
  • SketchUp - another Year 1 core software, similar 3D modelling requirements to AutoCAD.
  • Revit - core from Year 2. A BIM tool that ideally wants 32GB RAM, though 16GB will cover the basics. Doesn't run natively on Mac.
  • Adobe Creative Cloud (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator) - core from Year 1, mainly for presentations and portfolios. Runs fine on 16GB RAM.
  • Rhino + Grasshopper - specialist tools you'll likely meet in Year 2 or 3. Best on 32GB RAM but workable on 16GB depending on CPU strength. Ideally you want a CPU score of 981 or more and a GPU score of 7,788 or more.
  • ArchiCAD - a BIM alternative to Revit with similar needs. 16GB covers basic projects; 32GB opens up more.
  • Enscape/Lumion/Twinmotion - real-time rendering tools. Lumion is the heaviest of the three and wants 32GB RAM plus a GPU score around 11.6k, though it'll manage basic projects on 16GB.
  • V-Ray - photoreal rendering software, similarly happier with 32GB RAM but functional on 16GB.
  • Microsoft Office - needs just 8GB RAM, which almost any current laptop covers.
  • Ladybug/Honeybee and 3ds Max - elective software for environmental analysis and advanced visualisation. Wants 32GB RAM ideally, but comfortable on 16GB for what you'll be doing in modules.

In an ideal world you'd have 32GB RAM to push everything to its limit. But with RAM prices being what they are, 16GB won't ruin your degree. Most of the software that prefers 32GB will still run its main features smoothly on 16GB, which covers the majority of what you'll actually be doing.

The ASUS Zenbook 14 is a great laptop is you want something to last for a good few years, but you aren't willing to spend over £1000 for it. It comes with an Intel Core Ultra 7 255H, 16GB RAM and 1TB SSD (which will be more than enough for all the software you will be needing) which seems like a good deal for £800. Its OLED display will be perfect for rendering architecture designs whilst also being great to watch TV and movies on. Portability is also a big plus, weighing in at 1kg it won't make your backpack super heavy when walking to, from or around university. The battery life on this is also insane with it lasting up to 12 hours on light use so you don't need to worry about it not lasting a full day at university. However, with every laptop there are some drawbacks. Some reviewers say that the keyboard feels mushy at times and lacks tactile feedback so if having a good keyboard is important to you, it's something to consider. Others also report that the speakers are mediocre with poor bass so if having a laptop for entertainment as well as uni work it's also something in bear in mind. Finally, users have also reported thermal throttling under heavy use so this may be an issue under heavy rendering loads.

This laptop comes with a Ryzen 7 260 CPU, RTX 5050 GPU, 16GB RAM and1TB SSD and is currently priced at £1,100 on Amazon. The CPU and GPU are big improvements compared to the Zenbook and the difference will be felt under heavier workloads, especially with heavier software like Revit. For a powerful laptop, the battery life on this is pretty good at 7.5 hours which will be plenty for a day at university. And for students wanting a good laptop to watch movies or even play games on, reviewers have reported good audio quality compared to similar laptops. Some drawbacks are that the fan can get really noisy under heavy workloads, sometimes reaching up to 55 dB(A) so anyone who is bothered by noisy laptops it's something to think about. Reviewers have also showed annoyance at the keyboard, with the layout being strange compared to most laptops. For students who are used to laptops being a certain way it another thing to think about. Also something to bear in mind if you are wanting to have the laptop for a number of years is that it has 8GB of VRAM which may hinder future-proofing abilities.

This laptop also has 16GB RAM and 1TB SSD like the others but comes with an Intel Core i7-14700HX CPU and Nvidia GeForce RTX4070 GPU. With the CPU and GPU the performance on this thing will be insane and incredible for anyone wanting a laptop to eat through complex rendering processes. It also has a high-quality 1600p240 IPS display with vibrant colours with again is perfect for a lot of architecture work alongside if you want to use the laptop for gaming too. User have also commented that the keyboard is comfortable and responsive which is ideal for when you need to lock in. It does still have a few downsides though. People have commented that the chassis is prone to get fingerprints on them so you'll probably need to clean the laptop quite regularly. Kind of a given with a powerful laptop is that the cooling fans can get load when under heavy workloads. Reviewers have also commented that the speakers are ok, they are pretty average compared to similar laptops so if having good quality speakers are important to you it's worth thinking about.
