Introduction
If you are just about to start or currently undertaking an architecture degree (this blog also covers those doing Architectural Studies and Architecture & Environmental Design), it can be hard finding the right laptop for you and your degree. So we did the legwork. We looked at the software you'll actually be running for the next three-plus years, matched it against hardware, and ran it through our recommendation engine at three different budgets.
Summary: do NOT buy a Mac for architecture, don't assume you need 32GB RAM on day one, and the right pick changes a lot depending on how much you're spending.
Before looking into the laptops we recommend, let's first have a look at what software you will be running during your degree.
The software you'll be using
We pulled together the key software you'll meet across your architecture degree, and what each one actually needs from a laptop. The full list, and equivalents for other subjects, can be found on the Plample website.
- AutoCAD - core from Year 1, used for 2D and 3D drawings and models. Not hugely demanding, so 16GB RAM is fine.
- SketchUp - another core Year 1 tool, 3D modelling with the same requirements as AutoCAD.
- Revit - core from Year 2, a BIM tool for design work. It does not run natively on a Mac, so do not buy a Mac for architecture, you'd be paying Mac prices for a laptop that can't run software you need. Revit wants 32GB RAM ideally, but 16GB will cover the basics.
- Adobe Creative Cloud (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator) - core from Year 1, mainly for presentations and portfolios. Runs fine on 16GB RAM.
- Rhino + Grasshopper - specialist tools you'll likely meet in Year 2 or 3. Grasshopper is a visual programming and parametric tool used inside Rhino. Both work best with 32GB RAM but can run on 16GB depending on CPU strength. Ideally you want a CPU score of 981 or more and a GPU score of 7,788, so worth checking before you buy.
- ArchiCAD - a BIM alternative to Revit with similar demands. 16GB RAM handles basic projects; 32GB opens up more.
- Enscape, Lumion, Twinmotion - real-time rendering tools. Lumion is the heaviest of the three and prefers 32GB RAM, though it'll manage basic projects on 16GB. It also wants a strong graphics card - ideally a GPU score around 11.6k.
- V-Ray - photoreal rendering, similar to Lumion in preferring 32GB RAM but workable on 16GB.
- Microsoft Office - needs only 8GB RAM, so pretty much any laptop handles it.
- Ladybug/Honeybee and 3ds Max - elective software for environmental analysis and advanced visualisation. Ideally 32GB RAM, but both run comfortably on 16GB for what you'll be doing at degree level.
In an ideal world you'd have 32GB RAM to push everything to its max. But with RAM prices what they are, 16GB won't leave you stuck, most of these apps run their main features smoothly on 16GB, which covers the bulk of what you'll actually do on the course.

The ASUS Zenbook 14 is a great laptop is you want something to last for a good few years, but you aren't willing to spend over £1000 for it. It comes with an Intel Core Ultra 7 255H, 16GB RAM and 1TB SSD (which will be more than enough for all the software you will be needing) which seems like a good deal for £800. Its OLED display will be perfect for rendering architecture designs whilst also being great to watch TV and movies on. Portability is also a big plus, weighing in at 1kg it won't make your backpack super heavy when walking to, from or around university. The battery life on this is also insane with it lasting up to 12 hours on light use so you don't need to worry about it not lasting a full day at university. However, with every laptop there are some drawbacks. Some reviewers say that the keyboard feels mushy at times and lacks tactile feedback so if having a good keyboard is important to you, it's something to consider. Others also report that the speakers are mediocre with poor bass so if having a laptop for entertainment as well as uni work it's also something in bear in mind. Finally, users have also reported thermal throttling under heavy use so this may be an issue under heavy rendering loads.

Next up, coming in a little more expensive than the Zenbook is the ASUS TUF Gaming A16. This laptop comes with an AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 CPU, RTX 4070 GPU, 32GB RAM and 1TB SSD and is currently priced at £1,250 on Amazon. The CPU and GPU are a big improvement from the Zenbook and the difference will be felt under heavier workloads, especially software like Revit. The battery life is also very strong with it lasting over 11.5 hours with light use. The reviewers have complimented the build as strong and robust which makes sense with the laptop having a military grade chassis. Especially for rendering and design tasks, the vibrant 16" FHD screen with a 165Hz refresh rate will be a real asset and lead to a very smooth experience. For those interested in gaming on their laptop too, the CPU and GPU make the ASUS TUF Gaming a very solid gaming pick. However, there are a few drawbacks. Reviewers have commented that the keyboard can feel soft and fatiguing after heavy use, which may limit the lifespan on the laptop. People also commented that the webcam can be subpar so for those who may be wanting to do interviews and have regular meetings, it may be looking into something different. At university though, this is unlikely to be a massive issue. The soldered RAM leads to limited upgrade options but with 32GB RAM there will be plenty for the near future. And for any left-handed users, reviewers have commented that the port layout can be inconvenient.

This laptop also has 16GB RAM and 1TB SSD like the others but comes with an Intel Core i7-14700HX CPU and Nvidia GeForce RTX4070 GPU. With the CPU and GPU the performance on this thing will be insane and incredible for anyone wanting a laptop to eat through complex rendering processes. It also has a high-quality 1600p240 IPS display with vibrant colours with again is perfect for a lot of architecture work alongside if you want to use the laptop for gaming too. User have also commented that the keyboard is comfortable and responsive which is ideal for when you need to lock in. It does still have a few downsides though. People have commented that the chassis is prone to get fingerprints on them so you'll probably need to clean the laptop quite regularly. Kind of a given with a powerful laptop is that the cooling fans can get load when under heavy workloads. Reviewers have also commented that the speakers are ok, they are pretty average compared to similar laptops so if having good quality speakers are important to you it's worth thinking about.
